The NHS has launched a free, short (35mins) course for health and care staff, volunteers, third sector partners, social prescribers, etc. It is designed to help staff support people who might struggle with understanding their own health information (anything from understanding dosages of medication to information in an appointment letter). This is particularly helpful and relevant to the wellbeing offer, social prescribing, health coaching and other attempts to improve and address health inequalities.
Nearly half the adults in England (43%) struggle to read and understand health information. When that includes words and numbers, that rises to 61%. Health literacy stats for Hertfordshire can be seen here: HEALTH LITERACY – Home (geodata.uk)
Anyone can sign up for the course – there is a simple registration process here: Health Literacy – elearning for healthcare (e-lfh.org.uk)
